Transforming Lives Through Football: Premier Skills in Rongjiang

For the second time in a year, Rongjiang County in Guizhou province hosted Premier Skills training. In December 2024, the programme brought together 42 participants, including schoolteachers and football coaches to take part in a training course. The programme focuses on introducing innovative community football coaching techniques and equips educators with the tools to inspire young people through sport.

The Premier Skills approach emphasizes inclusivity, creativity, and maximum participation, a philosophy that resonated deeply with the participants.

It is very different from our traditional way of coaching. It gives autonomy to players and allows them freedom in learning and developing. I will bring this approach to schools and share it with my young players.

The students like this way of learning through play. It improves their football skills and inspires more kids to love football lessons.

On the final day of the course, 40 local schoolchildren participated in a showcase training session, experiencing first-hand the engaging coaching methods the participants had learned.

Compared to traditional coaching, the SMILES and STEPS frameworks work better for my active players—they truly enjoy the sessions.

College student Guo Taotao reflected on the success of the new approach

This initiative not only enhanced the skills of local coaches and teachers but also left a lasting impact on how football is taught and experienced in the region.

This training has made me realize football sessions can be designed and adapted to meet diverse needs. It will have a far-reaching impact on me and my players.

Pan Guangxue, school sports teacher

The Premier Skills programme continues to prove that the game is more than a sport—it's a tool for empowerment, creativity, and connection at the grassroots level.
