Manchester City crowned champions!

Julian Alvarez scores Manchester City's first goal during the match between Manchester City and Chelsea FC

Julian Alvarez scores Manchester City's first goal during the match between Manchester City and Chelsea FC

Manchester City have won their third league title in a row and their fifth in six seasons. The league victory had been officially sealed when Arsenal lost at Nottingham Forest, but that didn’t stop the Champions putting on a show for their faithful fans.

When City ran out onto the pitch at the Etihad, the crowd was already celebrating and the match was more like a testimonial. However, for their opponents Chelsea, there was still a lot to play for. City will always want a win, but when the camera turned to the City bench, where Jack Grealish, Kevin de Bruyne and Erling Haaland sat watching, it was clear that Guardiola had other silverware in mind.

The game was effectively won in the 12th minute when Fofana gave the ball away. Kalvin Phillips intercepted Fofana’s poorly placed pass and fed the ball through to Cole Palmer who made a short run before crossing to Julian Alvarez who scored with a powerful strike into the bottom left corner of the goal.

Final score: Manchester City 1 - 0 Chelsea

Firmino gifts a farewell goal

Roberto Firmino of Liverpool at end of the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Aston Villa at Anfield

Roberto Firmino of Liverpool at end of the Premier League match between Liverpool FC and Aston Villa at Anfield

When Liverpool hosted Aston Villa on Saturday, it was going to be the last time that James Milner and Roberto Firmino wore a Liverpool shirt at Anfield. However, they didn’t start the match.

In the first half, Villa looked the better team, with an aggressive midfield that kept pushing Liverpool back.

22 minutes in, Konate made a poor challenge on Ollie Watkins and gave away a penalty which to the relief of the home crowd, Watkins put wide.

Villa were not put off though and five minutes later went ahead from the boot of Jacob Ramsey. Douglas Luiz played in a great ball that Ramsey met well and fired into the centre of the goal in a tidy finish.

After the break, Liverpool looked better, but Aston Villa were still making things difficult.

Cody Gakpo scored and thought he’d equalised only for a VAR review to call the goal into question. It was an interesting call and tested the referee’s knowledge of the laws of the game. Alexander Arnold fired a ball to the back post that Diaz headed down. Ezri Konsa tried to knock the ball away, but van Dijk knocked it back across the goal and Gakpo poked it across the line. The goal was not allowed because Konsa’s touch was judged to be a deflection and not a deliberate play. This means that the shot was played to van Dijk by a Liverpool player and was therefore offside. It was a very difficult call for the referee.

As the minutes ticked by, the home crowd urged their team on, but things were not looking good until the 72nd minute when Roberto Firmino and James Milner were brought on to play their final minutes in a Liverpool shirt.

In the last minute of normal time, Roberto Firmino sealed his Liverpool legacy with a leap and a strike to equalise and salvage a point from his final appearance.

Final score: Liverpool 1 - 1 Aston Villa

Spurs let the lead slip away

Bryan Mbeumo scores Brentford's first goal during the match between Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford FC

Bryan Mbeumo scores Brentford's first goal during the match between Tottenham Hotspur and Brentford FC

Harry Kane gave  Spurs the lead after seven minutes from a free kick. Kulusevski and Kane lined up for the shot. In the end, Kulusevski knocked the ball slightly for Kane to thump over the wall and into the top right corner.

For the rest of the first half, Spurs were on top and drew several quality saves and blocks from defenders.

But then, in the second half, Spurs seemed to have lost their edge. Five minutes in, Spurs defence fell apart and Bryan Mbeumo was left in far too much space. Mbeumo took full advantage of the lapse and fired in a lovely goal and the scores were level.

Not long after that, Brentford won the ball back in their half and Aaron Hickey picked out Mbeumo who was making a run. It was perfectly timed and Mbeumo streaked behind Tottenham’s back four before scoring with a lovely finish from a tight angle.

The last glimmer of hope was extinguished when Oliver Skipp was robbed just outside the goal area by Brentford substitute Shandon Baptiste. Mbeumo collected the ball and darted towards goal. He could have gone for a hat trick but saw Yoane Wissa on his right. He crossed the ball and Wissa powered it past Fraser Forster in Spurs’ goal.

Final score: Tottenham Hotspur 1 - 3 Brentford

Football Phrase

Now it’s time for this week’s football phrase.

This week, the football phrase is a ********* ****. This is very common football vocabulary but it’s quite difficult to explain. A ********* **** is used when a team has a free kick near the goal. The defending players stand in a line as a physical shield between the person taking the free kick and the goal. I think you need to be quite brave to be in a ********* **** because you can’t duck out of the way if the ball is flying right at you. You just have to stand there and let it hit you.
