Football English: New Clubs Part 3

In this Premier Skills English Podcast, we join Rich, Jack and Rowan on Radio UK where they are hosting a football phone-in show and asking football fans to call in and talk about their football clubs. The language focus is on words and phrases connected to pride. Your task is to talk about a time when you felt proud of something or someone. Pride

In the roleplay, Rich and Rowan spoke to a Norwich City fan who is proud that their team will be playing in the Premier League next season. Look at the sentences below from the roleplay and the collocations with 'proud' or 'pride' in bold. Think about what they mean and then have a go at the activity.

Nathan: I suppose the biggest feeling I have is one of pride. I’m proud of what we’ve done at this club over the last few years. Finishing bottom of the Premier League two seasons ago hurt our pride but we stuck by our principles, swallowed our pride in the Championship and now the people of Norwich can take pride in their football team again.

Rich: Does it mean a lot to the fans to be back in the Premier League?

Nathan: Yes, being a Premier League city brings a lot of prestige and this team has done us proud.

Note: To be proud means to be very pleased and satisfied with something or someone that you are connected to in some way. Pride is the noun and is used to describe this feeling.
