How much did you understand?

Here is some of the vocabulary you might have heard in the roleplay. Do you know the words in bold?

It’s time for our weekly phone-in where you, our listeners, get the chance to have your say.

And we’ve got with us today Radio UK’s resident Premier League expert!

The phone lines are literally ablaze so I think we should take our first call.

You’ve had some time for it to sink in. How are you feeling?

I think they’ll definitely surprise a few of the more established Premier League teams.

Activity 1: In this activity, take a look at some of the words that were used in the roleplay and match them to their definitions.

Brentford Community Stadium will host Premier League football for the first time when the Bees kick off against Arsenal in August.

Promotion!

In the roleplay, Rowan and Jack spoke to a Brentford fan who was very excited about their team playing in the Premier League next season. Look at the sentences below from the roleplay and the phrases in bold connected to promotion. Think about what they mean and then have a go at the activity.

Rowan: How are you feeling after winning promotion?

Bill: Brentford Football Club have got promoted to the Premier League for the first-ever time. Since we went up I haven’t been able to think about anything else.

Note: Promoted is often used in the passive form: Brentford were promoted last season. The noun is promotion and a common collocation is to win promotion. We often use the collocation to get promoted in the same way. We also use the phrasal verb to go up. This is a bit more informal.

Idioms

In the roleplay, there were three idioms. Look at the sentences below from the roleplay and the idioms in bold connected. Think about what they mean and then have a go at the activity.

Bill: Oh, I’m still on cloud nine. The 29th of May 2021 is a day that will go down in history - the day Brentford Football Club got promoted to the Premier League.

Bill: I can’t wait for Brentford and Arsenal to kick off. I think there’s a big shock on the cards there.

Rowan: If they get a couple of wins under their belts that will give them the confidence to push on.

Activity 2: In this activity think about some of the idioms we used in the roleplay and language to talk about promotion.

An Exciting Time

Can you tell us about a time when you felt really excited?

Can you tell us about a time when you felt really excited?

In this task, we want you to talk about a time when you were very excited about something.

This could be a football match:

  • What was the match? Was it a cup final? Did it involve your team winning promotion? Was it a title decider?
  • Did it involve your club or your country? How often do you feel really excited about a football match?

Or it could be something completely different. Maybe a new job, a holiday, a new baby or your wedding day.

  • How did you feel and how did you celebrate? Were you on cloud nine like Bill in our roleplay?

Write your answers below and don't forget to make a guess at this week's football phrase!
