Developing the next generation of Coach Educators: Premier League Primary Stars in Wuhan

In March 2025, we successfully completed Stage 4 of the Premier League Primary Stars training programme working with students at Wuhan Sports University.

The programme aimed to equip these future teachers with the skills, methodologies and confidence to deliver engaging, student-centred PE and football sessions in schools. Over four stages, participants not only enhanced their coaching techniques but also learned to take on leadership roles as educators of their peers.

During earlier stages of the programme, participants delivered sessions in local schools and shared their reflections on how the PLPS philosophy had transformed their approach.

I've started to use SMILES and other methods to enhance my lesson planning and delivery. I’ll continue to use what I have learned. I now feel more prepared to support the football development I love.

Fan Xingyu, course participant

The concept of 'Maximum Participation' completely changed my approach. Instead of discipline issues, I now have active, engaged students enjoying their sessions.

The programme focused on student-centred teaching, encouraging participants to be reflective in their practice and creative in their delivery. Many spoke about how it helped them grow in confidence and adapt to different teaching challenges.

After Stage one, I began using fun games to start my sessions. The children's engagement skyrocketed, and my own confidence grew too.

He Ruiyi, course participant

This course has changed my teaching – and my life. I now have the confidence to inspire my students the same way I’ve been inspired.

The fourth stage built on the foundations laid in the previous three phases, transitioning student participants from learners to leaders as they explored the role of Coach Educators – individuals trained to support and guide their peers in developing effective teaching and coaching skills.

My role changed from a coach to a coach educator. It allowed me to view my teaching style from a new perspective and improve my practice.

Qian Xiliang, course participant

I’ve come to understand the responsibilities of a coach educator and will apply what I’ve learned to my future work.

He Xianming, course participant

With support from Premier League-trained educators, the students learned how to deliver workshops and practical sessions, gaining insights into adult learning and peer coaching. These future Coach Educators developed their understanding of key methodologies and successfully applied them during training sessions.

Participants will continue cascading their learning to future teachers, ensuring that the values and methods of Premier League Primary Stars become embedded in the next generation of educators.
